The Empire State Building (1931)

Completed in 410 days during the depths of the Great Depression, the Empire State Building remains one of the most recognized structures in the world. At the time of completion it was the tallest building on earth.

The exterior cladding is Indiana limestone. Architects Shreve, Lamb & Harmon specified it for the combination of qualities it offered: workability for the intricate Art Deco detailing, consistent color and grade for the massive quantity required, and proven performance for a building meant to stand for generations.

The numbers involved were extraordinary: the project required 200,000 cubic feet of Indiana limestone and granite, cut and shipped from southern Indiana to Manhattan and set on the rising steel frame at a pace that matched the building’s construction speed.

The facade has required minimal intervention in 95 years of service. The limestone has weathered, developing the even patina characteristic of natural stone in urban environments. The carved Art Deco details remain crisp and legible at street level. The building’s appearance today is essentially its original appearance — just aged.

The Pentagon (1943)

The Pentagon was designed, constructed, and occupied within 16 months — one of the most compressed construction schedules for a building of its scale in American history. The five-sided structure covers 29 acres of floor space and was, at completion, the largest office building in the world.

Indiana limestone clads the exterior. The specification reflected the same reasoning as the Empire State Building: a material that could be fabricated and installed at production speed while delivering performance commensurate with a building of national significance.

The Pentagon’s limestone has been in continuous service for 83 years through Washington, DC’s humid subtropical climate — a climate with hot summers, cold winters, and significant freeze-thaw cycling. The exterior has been maintained and restored in sections over the decades, but the material itself has performed to expectations.

The 2001 attack damaged the western face of the building. The restoration, completed in 2002, used Indiana limestone to match the original — a direct demonstration of the material’s continued availability and the ability to closely match 60-year-old stone with material from the same geological formation.

Washington National Cathedral (1907–1990)

The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul — known as Washington National Cathedral — took 83 years to complete. Construction began in 1907 and the final finial was set in 1990, with President George H.W. Bush in attendance.

Indiana limestone is the primary building material throughout. The Cathedral’s Gothic Revival architecture required the most demanding stone fabrication of any building in American history: hundreds of unique carved elements, complex tracery, grotesques, finials, pinnacles, and ornamental details across a building the length of two city blocks.

The carving work spanned generations of craftsmen. Hand-carving techniques used on the earliest sections gave way to modern methods on later work, with Indiana limestone accommodating both approaches. The stone’s fine grain and workability enabled details that would have been impossible in coarser or harder materials.

State Capitol Buildings

Thirty-five state capitols include Indiana limestone in their construction. This concentration in civic architecture reflects deliberate choices by state governments and their architects about permanence, dignity, and material quality.

The Indiana State Capitol (1888) in Indianapolis is among the earliest — and most locally appropriate — examples. The building has been in continuous service for 138 years.
