When to Engage the Fabricator
The single most impactful decision in Indiana limestone specification is when you bring the fabricator into the conversation. Most architects engage too late.
Bid stage (the default — too late): The fabricator receives a complete set of construction documents and is asked to price the work. At this point, design decisions are locked. Panel sizes may not optimize for quarry block dimensions. Anchor details may require redesign. Color and grade choices may not reflect available material. The fabricator prices what’s specified, not what’s optimal.
Problems discovered at bid stage become change orders. Change orders on stone work are expensive and create schedule risk on an already-pressured construction timeline.
Design development (right): A fabricator engaged at design development can provide input that shapes the documentation before decisions are locked. Panel sizing can be optimized. Anchor locations can be coordinated with the structural engineer before the structural drawings are complete. Color and grade samples can be reviewed before the specification is finalized.
This engagement doesn’t commit you to a specific fabricator — it produces better documents that benefit whoever executes the work. The information developed during design development makes the project more buildable and reduces the likelihood of specification problems becoming construction problems.
Schematic design (ideal for complex projects): On projects with significant carved programs, complex geometry, or demanding schedules, early fabricator engagement at schematic design allows realistic assessment of what’s achievable within budget and timeline before the design direction is set.
A carved ornamental program that looks achievable on paper may require a fabrication timeline that doesn’t fit the construction schedule. Better to know that in schematic design than at bid stage.

Specifying Color and Grade Correctly
Indiana limestone has two colors (buff and gray) and three current grades (Standard, Rustic, and Variegated). Color and grade are independent variables. Your specification must call out both.
“Buff limestone” is incomplete. “Buff Standard” is correct. “Gray Rustic” is correct. “Limestone to match existing” requires sample submission and approval language that makes matching criteria explicit.
Buff: Light tan to cream with warm undertones. The most common color — approximately 75% of quarried stone. Most widely available, shortest lead times.
Gray: Light to medium gray with cool undertones. Approximately 25% of production. May require additional lead time for large quantities.
Standard grade: Uniform texture with occasional small shells and fossil fragments. Grain size up to 1/8 inch. Most commonly specified. Appropriate for formal architecture requiring visual consistency.
Rustic grade: More pronounced texture variation. Visible shells, fossil fragments, and natural markings. Grain size up to 3/8 inch. Specified when natural character is desired.
Variegated grade: Intentional color mixing — buff and gray zones within individual pieces. Maximum natural variation. Each piece is unique.
A note on Select grade: Select grade is no longer produced. If you encounter it in older specifications you’re updating, replace with Standard grade with appropriate sampling language.
All grades perform identically: Grade classification is appearance only. A Rustic grade panel has the same compressive strength, absorption, and durability as a Standard grade panel of equivalent thickness and density. Don’t specify grade based on structural assumptions — specify it based on the appearance the design requires.

Writing Color Language That Works
The most common specification error in limestone projects is color language that assumes manufactured consistency from a natural material. This sets up disputes at delivery and creates problems on active construction sites.
What doesn’t work:
This specification is unachievable. Natural stone has natural variation. Specifying “no variation” guarantees that something delivered to the site will be rejected — because every piece of natural stone varies from every other piece. You’ll spend the project managing color disputes instead of managing construction.
What works:
This language acknowledges natural variation, establishes the approval mechanism, and creates a documented standard that governs delivery without setting unachievable expectations.
The range board: For significant projects, a range board — typically 4-6 pieces showing the lightest and darkest acceptable tones — provides clearer guidance than individual small samples. Both parties retain a copy. The range board becomes the color standard for the project.

ASTM Standards and Technical Reference
Indiana limestone is classified under ASTM C568 Standard Specification for Limestone Dimension Stone as Category II (Medium Density). Your specification section should reference this standard.
Minimum specification language:
Color: [Buff / Gray / Variegated]

Note on density classifications: ASTM C568 defines three density categories. Indiana limestone falls exclusively within Category II (Medium Density). Do not specify Type I (Low Density) — that is not Indiana limestone. Do not specify Type III (High Density) — Indiana limestone does not meet that classification. Category II is the correct and only applicable classification.

Specifying Finishes
Indiana limestone is available in several standard finishes. Your specification must call out the finish for all exposed surfaces — face, bed joints, returns, soffits, and any other surface that will be visible after installation. Different surfaces may have different finish requirements.
Available finishes:
Smooth (Planer): Planed surface with minimal texture. Standard finish. Clean, even surface suitable for formal interior and exterior applications.
Honed: Polished to a smooth, matte sheen. Elegant and refined. Common for countertops, flooring, and interior walls.
Chat Sawn: Slightly textured, granular surface from the gang sawing process. Suitable for both interior and exterior applications. Moderate slip resistance.
Split Face (Rock Face): Stone split along natural bedding planes. Natural, rough surface. Excellent for exterior applications and building facades. Can only be applied to bed surfaces, not fabricated edges.
Bush Hammered: Dimpled, rough texture from mechanical pounding. Excellent slip resistance for paving and stair treads.
Machine Tooled: Parallel tool marks create linear texture. Traditional finish with strong shadow lines. Common for formal exterior work.
Broached/Grooved: Parallel grooves cut into the face. Allows variety in finish texture. Creates shadow and visual depth.
Common finish specification error: Specifying a finish only on the face without addressing beds, joints, and returns. Stone setters encounter these surfaces during installation and in completed work at window reveals, door surrounds, and other locations where returns are visible. Specify finish requirements for all surfaces that will be seen.

Panel Sizing and Dimensional Coordination
Panel dimensions affect cost, lead time, and buildability. Dimensions that align with quarry block dimensions and standard saw setups reduce waste and may reduce lead time. Dimensions that require special setups or produce significant waste cost more and may take longer.
Standard thicknesses: 2″, 3″, 4″, and 5″. These align with standard gang saw setups. Non-standard thicknesses require dedicated saw setups and typically cost more.
Practical panel size limits:
- Height: 2 feet to 8 feet typical; up to 10 feet with engineering consideration
- Width: 2 feet to 5 feet typical
- Weight: Keep panels under 1,500 lbs for practical handling
- Area: Approximately 30-50 square feet maximum depending on thickness
Round number trap: Architects sometimes specify panel dimensions in round numbers that don’t align with quarry block dimensions or standard saw setups. A 48″ × 96″ panel sounds clean on paper but may waste significant material compared to a 46″ × 94″ panel that optimizes for available block dimensions. Ask the fabricator about optimal sizing during design development.
Tolerance specification: Standard fabrication tolerances for Indiana limestone are ±1/16″ on face dimensions and ±1/8″ on thickness. Tighter tolerances are achievable but cost more. Specify the tolerance your installation method requires — not the tightest possible tolerance.

Lead Times and Schedule Coordination
Indiana limestone is custom fabricated. It doesn’t come off a shelf. Schedule planning must account for realistic fabrication timelines.
Typical lead times from approved shop drawings to first delivery:
- Simple ashlar, standard finishes: 6-8 weeks
- Standard commercial project: 10-14 weeks
- Complex profiles or carved work: 14-20 weeks
- Large commercial programs: 16-24 weeks
Add time for shop drawings: Shop drawing preparation takes 3-6 weeks. Architect review takes 2-4 weeks. Add 6-10 weeks to the above lead times for total time from contract execution to first delivery.
Peak season impact: Spring and summer are peak construction season. Fabrication shops run at capacity. Lead times extend. Projects requiring summer delivery need contracts in place by fall of the prior year.
Schedule specification language: Your specification should require the contractor to submit a production and delivery schedule at contract award, coordinated with the construction schedule. This creates accountability for lead times without locking in specific dates that may shift as construction proceeds.

Shop Drawing Requirements
Shop drawings are the fabrication document — the translation of your design intent into the exact dimensions, details, and sequences that govern every piece of stone on the building. Your specification should define clear shop drawing requirements.
What shop drawings should include:
- Elevation drawings showing every panel in its installed location
- Individual piece drawings with exact dimensions and tolerances
- Finish callouts for all exposed surfaces
- Anchor locations and anchor types for each panel
- Edge profiles and joint details
- Corner conditions and special situations
- Installation sequence numbers corresponding to delivery schedule
Review timeline: Build 2-4 weeks of architect review time into your schedule for each shop drawing submission. Complex projects may require multiple review cycles. Review time that isn’t built into the schedule becomes schedule compression later.
The critical rule: No fabrication before shop drawing approval. This sounds obvious but gets violated under schedule pressure. Stone cut from unapproved drawings is stone that may need to be recut. Enforce the approval requirement regardless of schedule pressure — it exists to protect the project.

Common Specification Errors and How to Avoid Them
Error 1: “Uniform color with no variation”
Natural stone has natural variation. This language is unachievable and invites disputes.
Fix: Write color language that acknowledges variation and establishes approval by range sample.
Error 2: Not specifying grade
“Buff Indiana limestone” without a grade specification leaves an important aesthetic decision to the contractor.
Fix: Always specify color AND grade. “Buff Standard” or “Gray Rustic” — never just “limestone.”
Error 3: Specifying Type I or Type III density
Indiana limestone is Category II only. Specifying other categories creates a conflict between the material requirement and what the material actually is.
Fix: Reference ASTM C568 Category II (Medium Density) exclusively.
Error 4: Round panel dimensions that waste material
Dimensions that don’t align with quarry block dimensions create unnecessary waste and cost.
Fix: Confirm panel dimensions with the fabricator during design development.
Error 5: Finish specified on face only
Returns, soffits, and bed surfaces are visible in many applications. Unspecified finishes get the fabricator’s default choice — which may not be what you intended.
Fix: Specify finish requirements for all exposed surfaces explicitly.
Error 6: Lead time not confirmed against schedule
10-16 weeks of fabrication lead time doesn’t fit an 8-week window. This problem is discovered at bid, creating schedule compression that affects the entire project.
Fix: Confirm fabrication lead time during design development before the construction schedule is locked.
Error 7: Late fabricator engagement
Fabricator engaged at bid stage rather than design development means problems are discovered after decisions are locked.
Fix: Engage a fabricator at design development for any project with significant limestone scope.
